Eight people lost their lives on Thursday in a chain reaction car crash on the Indiana Toll Road, thirty miles of South Bend, state police said.

The accident occurred close to Bristol, Indiana, at approximately 6:45am when a tractor trailer crashed into the back of a passenger vehicle in traffic that had slowed down due to a prior accident on the same road.

The accident sparked an accordion style crash that involved four passenger vehicles and three tractor trailers. Two other people were injured in the crash, one of them critically injured. None of the truck drivers sustained serious injuries.

Five of the people killed were traveling in the same car. The westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed after the wreck.
